How to Connect Your Facebook Page and Instagram Account

Why linking Facebook and Instagram matters for a business, what to prepare, the general steps and how to fix the usual problems.

SSocialAI team

Many small businesses run Facebook and Instagram as two separate worlds: different passwords, different people in charge, messages in two apps, posts made twice. Linking the two accounts removes much of that double work, and it is required for most scheduling tools and many ad options.

Meta changes its menus often, so instead of exact button paths, this guide explains what you need, the general steps that stay the same and how to solve the problems that usually block the connection.

Why connect the two accounts

  • Post to both from one place. Create a post once and publish or schedule it on Facebook and Instagram together, for example in Meta Business Suite.
  • One inbox. Answer Facebook and Instagram messages and comments in one place.
  • Ads on both platforms. Run one ad that can appear on Facebook and Instagram, managed from the same account.
  • Combined insights. See how your content performs across both.
  • Third-party tools. Most scheduling and publishing services, including SocialAI, need this connection to post to Instagram on your behalf.

What to prepare first

Most connection problems come from one of these points. Check them before you start:

  1. A Facebook Page for your business, not just a personal profile. If you do not have one yet, start with setting up a Facebook Page.
  2. Full control of the Page. You need admin-level access, or the equivalent full permissions in Meta's current system. Limited roles often cannot connect accounts.
  3. An Instagram professional account, meaning a business or creator account, not a personal one. Switching is free and done in the Instagram app settings.
  4. Login details for both, and access to the email or phone number linked to them, in case Meta asks for confirmation.
  5. Two-factor authentication turned on, which is a good idea for both accounts anyway.

The general steps

The exact screens differ between the mobile app, the web and Meta Business Suite, but the logic is always the same.

Option 1: from the Facebook side

  1. Open your Facebook Page, or Meta Business Suite with the Page selected.
  2. Go to the Page settings and look for a section about linked accounts or Instagram.
  3. Choose to connect an Instagram account and log in to Instagram when asked.
  4. Confirm the permissions, for example access to messages, if you want one inbox.

Option 2: from the Instagram side

  1. In the Instagram app, open your professional profile and go to the settings for your business tools or account centre.
  2. Look for the option to connect or share to a Facebook Page.
  3. Log in to Facebook if asked and choose the correct Page from the list.
  4. Confirm the connection.

When it works, you should see your Instagram account listed in Meta Business Suite and be able to choose both platforms when creating a post.

Common problems and how to fix them

  • The Page does not appear in the list. Usually your personal profile does not have full control of that Page. Ask the current admin to give you full access, then try again.
  • Instagram cannot be connected. Check that it is a professional account, not a personal one.
  • The account is already linked to another Page. Someone may have connected it earlier, for example a former employee or agency. Disconnect it from the old Page first, or ask whoever has access to do so.
  • Security confirmation fails. Make sure you can receive codes on the email or phone attached to the account. Update old contact details before connecting.
  • Everything looks connected, but posting fails. Log out and back in, update the apps, and check that permissions were not limited during setup.

Keep access safe

After connecting, take ten minutes to protect your business:

  • Have at least two trusted people with full access, so you are never locked out.
  • Remove former employees and agencies you no longer work with.
  • Use strong, unique passwords and two-factor authentication on both accounts.
  • Be careful with messages claiming your Page will be deleted unless you click a link. These are a common scam aimed at business owners.

Start this week

  1. Check your role on the Facebook Page and switch Instagram to a professional account if needed.
  2. Connect the accounts from either side, using the steps above.
  3. Open Meta Business Suite and confirm both appear.
  4. Review who has access and remove anyone who should not.
  5. Schedule your first post to both platforms. Our guide to Meta Business Suite basics shows how.

Once the accounts are linked, you can also connect them to SocialAI in a few clicks, and it will publish to both on your chosen schedule. You can create an account and look at the panel before deciding.
