How to turn happy customers into content

How to collect reviews, photos and stories from happy customers, ask for permission properly and turn them into posts people believe.

Whatever you say about your business, customers know you are biased. When another customer says it, they listen. A real person holding your cake at their daughter's birthday, or a short message saying the haircut was exactly what they wanted, persuades better than any slogan you could write.

The good news is that happy customers already exist. You only need a simple system to notice them, ask politely and turn their words into posts.

Where customer content hides

  • Messages and DMs. Thank-you notes, photos sent after delivery, voice messages. Most businesses read them and forget them.
  • Tags and mentions. Check Stories and posts where customers tag you. These are often the best photos of your product in real life.
  • Reviews. Google, Facebook and booking sites. Short written reviews make clean text posts.
  • Face-to-face compliments. When someone says this is the best khachapuri in Batumi at the counter, ask if they would write it down or let you quote them.
  • Repeat customers. Someone who has visited every week for a year has a story worth telling.

How to ask for permission

Always ask before you post someone's photo, name or words. It is respectful, and it protects you. Keep it short and easy to say yes or no:

Thank you so much for the photo, it made our day. Would you mind if we shared it on our page? We can tag you or keep it anonymous, whichever you prefer.
  • Offer to post without their name or face if they prefer.
  • Never post screenshots of private chats without clear permission, and hide names and phone numbers.
  • Be extra careful with children. Ask parents, and consider not showing faces at all.
  • For clinics and health services, do not share anything that reveals a patient's condition. General praise for the service is the safe limit.
  • If someone later asks you to remove a post, remove it quickly and politely.

Post formats for customer stories

  • Repost with a thank-you. Share their photo or Story with a short, personal caption. The simplest and often the most effective format.
  • Quote card. A short review on a clean background with the customer's first name. Do not edit their words beyond fixing an obvious typo.
  • Mini case story. Three parts: what the customer needed, what you did, how it turned out. Works well for repairs, renovations, event catering and wedding flowers.
  • Customer of the month. A regular customer with their usual order and a few words about why they keep coming back.
  • Before and after. For salons, cleaners, tailors, car services. Same angle and light for both photos.
  • Video message. A 10-second clip where a customer says one sentence in their own words. Only if they are comfortable on camera.

Make it easy for customers to share

  • Create a photo-friendly moment. A nice-looking packaging, a corner with good light, a plate that looks great from above.
  • Ask at the right time. Right after a good experience: when they pick up the cake, finish the haircut or check out of the guesthouse.
  • Make tagging simple. Put your Instagram name on the receipt, the packaging or a small card at the table.
  • Thank people publicly. When customers see others being thanked, more of them share.

Avoid paying for reviews or offering discounts in exchange for positive reviews. It undermines trust and can break platform rules. A friendly thank-you or a small gesture for sharing a photo, regardless of what they say, is fine.

What to avoid

  • Inventing reviews or customers. If people discover it, the damage lasts much longer than the benefit.
  • Posting only five-star praise. An occasional honest story about fixing a problem builds even more trust.
  • Overloading the feed. One customer post a week is plenty, mixed with your own content.

Start this week

  1. Go through your messages and tags from the last month and save every positive photo or comment.
  2. Ask three customers for permission to share.
  3. Post one repost with a thank-you and one quote card.
  4. Add your Instagram name to your receipts or packaging.
