The First Three Seconds: Video Hooks That Stop the Scroll

Most viewers decide in seconds whether to keep watching. Practical hook types, examples for local businesses and common opening mistakes to avoid.

You spent twenty minutes filming a lovely video of your bakery. It opens with a slow shot of the door, then a logo, then you say hello. By then, most people have already scrolled past.

On short video, the first seconds decide everything. The good news is that a strong opening is a skill, not a talent. Below are hook types that work for local businesses, with examples you can adapt today.

What a hook needs to do

In the first one to three seconds, a viewer should understand at least one of these:

  • What they will see: a result, a process, an answer.
  • Why it matters to them: it saves money, solves a problem, looks delicious.
  • That something is about to happen: movement, a reveal, a question.

A hook has three layers working together: the picture (what is on screen in the first frame), the text (a short line on screen) and the words (what you say, if you speak). Since many people watch without sound, the picture and text must work on their own.

Seven hook types that work

  1. Result first. Show the finished thing before the process. The perfect cake slice, the finished haircut, the cleaned car. Then show how you got there.
  2. Mid-action start. Begin in the middle of the movement: the knife already cutting, the cheese already stretching, the paint already going on the wall.
  3. Direct question. On-screen text that names a problem your customer has: Why does your khachapuri go soggy?
  4. The mistake. Stop storing tomatoes in the fridge or Three mistakes people make before a haircut. People want to avoid errors.
  5. Number promise. 3 gifts under 50 GEL, 5 places to eat near Rustaveli. It tells viewers exactly what they get.
  6. Before and after split. The before on screen for one second with text Wait for it, then the reveal.
  7. Unexpected detail. Something viewers do not usually see: the inside of a wine qvevri, a 5 a.m. bakery, a 40-step process for one handmade item.

Examples for different businesses

  • Café: first frame is milk being poured into a latte with the text The only latte art I can do. Light humour works.
  • Beauty salon: first frame is the finished nails close to the lens; text Autumn colours clients ask for most.
  • Clothing shop: owner holds up one jacket; text One jacket, three outfits.
  • Guesthouse in Kazbegi: first frame is the view from the window at sunrise; text This is what you wake up to.
  • Dental clinic: text How often should you really change your toothbrush? Keep the answer general and avoid promising results.

Common opening mistakes

  • Logo or intro animation first. Put branding at the end or in a corner.
  • Long greeting. Hello everyone, today I want to tell you... wastes the most valuable seconds. Start with the point.
  • Empty or dark first frame. The cover and first frame should be bright and clear.
  • A hook that lies. If the text promises something the video does not deliver, people feel cheated and stop trusting you.
  • Text too small or too long. Five to eight words, large, in the centre.

How to test and improve your hooks

Hooks get better with practice and simple testing:

  • Watch your own video with the sound off for three seconds. Would you keep watching if it were a stranger's?
  • In your Reels insights, look at how long people watch on average and where they drop off. A big drop at the start means the hook needs work.
  • Try the same video with two different openings, a week apart, and compare.
  • Keep a note of hooks that worked and reuse their structure with new content.

Hooks are not only for video. The first line of a photo post caption works the same way. If writing strong opening lines for your regular posts takes too long, a service like SocialAI can draft those captions for you, and you can edit them before they go out.

Start this week

  • Pick your next video and choose one of the seven hook types.
  • Cut everything before the first interesting frame.
  • Add five to eight words of on-screen text in the first second.
  • Check it with the sound off before posting.

Pair your hooks with readable text; see why your videos need subtitles. Three good seconds will not save a weak video, but three weak seconds will hide a great one.
